RODA Abrasive Nylon Grades Explained – Colour, Grit, Finish & Material Guide

RODA Abrasive Nylon Grades Explained

RODA abrasive nylon products are used for controlled deburring, cleaning, blending, satin finishing and surface preparation across metals, plastics and precision components. This guide explains the RODA abrasive nylon grade system, including colour, grade, cutting action, typical finish and recommended starting points for different materials.

The same abrasive nylon grade system is used across a range of RODA products, including RODA NyWheels, abrasive nylon buffing balls, NyMops, hand pads, bore tools and abrasive nylon roll. Individual product formats may not be available in every grade, but this page gives you a central reference point for understanding how each grade behaves.

Use this guide as a starting point, then test on your own material where finish consistency, edge control or cosmetic appearance is critical.

What is Abrasive Nylon?

Abrasive nylon is a non-woven surface conditioning material made from tough synthetic nylon fibres formed into an open, porous web. The web is bonded with resin and coated with abrasive minerals such as aluminium oxide or silicon carbide.

Unlike a flat sheet of abrasive paper, abrasive nylon behaves more like a flexible three-dimensional abrasive sponge. It conforms to the shape of the workpiece, follows curves and profiles, and helps create a controlled finish without aggressively cutting away the base geometry of the part.

Why Use RODA Abrasive Nylon?

RODA abrasive nylon is designed for clean, controlled surface preparation. It is especially useful when you need to deburr, clean, blend or satin finish a component without using loose compound or an overly rigid abrasive tool.

Resists loading and clogging

The open web structure allows dust, swarf and debris to escape through the material, helping the abrasive keep working cleanly.

Conforms to complex shapes

The flexible nylon web follows curves, corners, profiles, holes and awkward details more easily than rigid abrasive tools.

No compound required

The abrasive is built into the nylon web, so it can be used dry for cleaner, faster and more repeatable finishing.

Consistent finishes

Ideal for repeatable satin, brushed and pre-polished finishes before final polishing or inspection.

Cleaner Than Steel Wool

Non-woven abrasive nylon does not rust, shred or leave fine metal splinters behind on the workpiece.

Made by Moleroda

RODA abrasive nylon products form part of Moleroda’s UK-made range for deburring, polishing and precision finishing.

Quick Grade Selector

For most applications, you can narrow your choice by thinking in terms of three broad groups: fine cleaning and finishing, general satin finishing, or heavier deburring and graining.

Understanding the RODA Grade Scale

The RODA abrasive nylon grade range moves from very fine cleaning grades through to aggressive deburring grades. Finer grades are used when you want to clean, brighten or refine the surface with minimal stock removal. Coarser grades are used when you need more cutting action for deburring, line blending, graining or surface preparation.

Fine Grades: Cleaning, Brightening and Delicate Finishing

White, Gold and UFS are the best starting points when the aim is to clean, brighten or lightly finish a surface without adding a heavy scratch pattern.

Medium Grades: Satin Finishing and Machine-Line Blending

Green, MA and CA are the most useful middle-ground grades for general workshop finishing. They are often the best place to start when you need a controlled satin finish, light deburring or machine-line blending.

Coarse Grades: Heavy Deburring, Graining and Surface Preparation

HDMA, Black, Superior Brown and HDVCA are used where more cutting power is required. These grades are better suited to heavier machine marks, harder metals, graining, scale removal and aggressive deburring.

Which Grade Should I Choose by Material?

The right abrasive nylon grade depends on both the material and the finish you want to achieve. Always start finer when working on delicate parts, precious metals, plastics or components where geometry must be preserved. Move coarser only when the finer grade is not removing the mark, burr or surface contamination efficiently enough.

Choosing By Finish Type

Sometimes it is easier to choose by the finish you want rather than by material. The guide below gives a practical starting point.

RODA Abrasive Nylon Product Formats

The same grade logic can be applied across different RODA abrasive nylon formats, but each format is designed for a different type of contact, access and surface area.

Popular Starting Points

These recommendations are practical starting points for common materials and applications. Always test before moving into production or final finishing work.

Important Notes Before Choosing a Grade

Start finer where possible

A finer grade is safer on delicate parts, plastics, precious metals and cosmetic surfaces.

Move coarser only when needed

If the grade is not removing the burr, line or surface mark efficiently, move to the next coarser option.

Use light pressure

Let the abrasive nylon do the work. Excessive pressure can generate heat, reduce tool life and create a heavier finish than intended.

Check product availability

Not every RODA abrasive nylon product is available in every grade or size.

Check RPM separately

Operating speed depends on the diameter and format of the product, not only the abrasive grade. Always refer to the product page for RPM guidance.

Test before production work

Always test on a sample or non-critical area before using a new grade on finished components.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

White F0 is technically the finest RODA nylon grade because it doesn’t feature any abrasive material. It is best suited to delicate cleaning, deflashing and polishing where minimal abrasion is required, especially on plastics, acrylics and dental materials.

The finest RODA nylon grade is actually Gold F1000 which offers very light abrasion.

HDVCA C80 is the coarsest RODA abrasive nylon grade. It is designed for maximum deburring and cleaning power on tougher materials such as mild steel, stainless steel and hard alloys.

Green M400, MA M320 and CA C180 are the best starting points for most satin finishing applications. UFS F600 gives a lighter satin finish, while HDMA C120 gives a heavier brushed finish.

For jewellery work, Green M400 and MA M320 are good starting points for satin finishing. Gold F1000 and UFS F600 are useful for finer cleaning and finishing before polishing. Always test on a sample first, especially with softer precious metals.

White F0 is the best starting point for plastics, acrylics and dental materials where delicate cleaning or deflashing is required. Use light pressure and avoid excessive speed to reduce heat build-up.

No. RODA abrasive nylon products contain abrasive mineral within the nylon web, so they are designed to work without additional polishing compound. This makes them cleaner and faster to use for deburring, cleaning and satin finishing.

No. The grade system is shared across the RODA abrasive nylon range, but individual products may have a narrower selection depending on format, size, shank type and intended use. Always check the variation selectors on the specific product page before ordering.

Scotch-Brite is a well-known brand name often associated with non-woven abrasive material. RODA abrasive nylon products use a similar style of non-woven abrasive nylon web and are manufactured by Moleroda for deburring, cleaning, blending and surface finishing applications.
