A RODA Felt tool must be paired with an appropriate compound and, unless it is a hand-polishing format, compatible driving equipment. The correct combination depends on the material, required finish, workpiece geometry and felt-tool construction.
Choose a Polishing or Lapping Compound
- Diamond Polishing and Lapping Compounds – for precision polishing and lapping of mould tools, dies, hardened steel, carbide, ceramics and other hard materials.
- All Polishing Compounds – compare compounds, pastes and powders for metals, precious metals, plastics, acrylics, glass and other surfaces.
- Lapping Fluid – used where appropriate with diamond compound to maintain lubrication, limit drying and support consistent compound distribution.
Choose Compatible Driving Equipment
- Mounted bobs, cones, points and small wheels: Commonly used with compatible micromotor systems, die grinders or flexible-shaft machines.
- Unmounted felt wheels: Mounted on suitable arbors or spindles and driven by compatible bench polishing equipment.
- Felt hand pads, files and lapping sticks: Used manually and do not require powered equipment.
Always confirm compatibility before use:
Check the felt tool’s shank or centre-hole size, the machine’s collet or mounting system, the tool diameter and the permitted operating speed. Exact compatibility should be confirmed on the individual product pages.

Typical Polishing Applications
Choosing the Right Felt Density and Shape
Felt density influences flexibility, polishing response and the ability of the tool to retain its shape. The most suitable option depends on the workpiece geometry, material, compound and required finish.
Soft Felt
Soft felt conforms readily to curves and irregular surfaces. It is commonly selected for final polishing and applications where flexibility is more important than maintaining a precise edge or profile.
Medium-Density Felt
Medium grades provide a balance between flexibility and shape retention, making them suitable for a broad range of general polishing and finishing operations.
Hard and Hardened Felt
Harder felt retains its form more effectively and provides greater control on flat surfaces, edges and defined profiles. Chemically hardened grades may be selected for demanding lapping applications with diamond compound.

Getting Consistent Results with RODA Felt
The finish produced depends on more than the felt tool alone. Surface preparation, compound grade, felt density, speed and pressure must work together as part of a controlled process.
- Prepare the surface to a consistent pre-polishing finish before moving to felt.
- Match the shape of the felt tool to the geometry of the workpiece.
- Apply only enough compound to maintain effective cutting action.
- Use controlled speed and light pressure to limit unnecessary heat generation.
- Keep a separate felt tool for each diamond or abrasive grade to prevent cross-contamination.
For narrow slots, fine ribs or delicate details, a reciprocating tool or ultrasonic system may provide better access than a rotary tool.
