Metal Cutting Compounds

Metal cutting compounds are aggressive, high-cut bars used to remove scratches, level surfaces and prepare metal for polishing. They are the first compound stage after abrasive preparation and are designed for buffing metal on a mop, not for automotive paintwork.

The range includes Ferrocut 3050, Abracut, Titan and Senior 4040 cutting and pre-polishing bars, Menzerna 456G Heavy Cut, and Apollo Tripoli. Each product page lists the cut and colour ratings, suitable metals and recommended mop.

Cutting compounds leave a matt or pre-polished surface. Follow with a cut-and-colour or mirror-finishing compound to bring up the shine.

Pair with a firm mop

Most cutting compounds work best on a firm mop such as sisal.

Choosing a Metal Cutting Compound

Higher cut ratings remove material faster; higher colour ratings leave a brighter surface and reduce the work needed in the next stage.

CompoundCut / ColourBest Suited To
Ferrocut 30509/10 cut, 2/10 colourHeavy stock removal on stainless steel, ferrous metals and hard exotic alloys, with a sisal mop
Abracut9/10 cut, 3/10 colourRapid stock removal on stainless steel, ferrous metals and hard exotic alloys after approximately 180-grit preparation, with a sisal mop
Titan9/10 cut, 2/10 colourLevelling ferrous surfaces for a uniform satin or pre-plating finish
Senior 40408/10 cut, 4/10 colourA more balanced first stage on ferrous and non-ferrous metals
Menzerna 456G Heavy CutHeavy cut, dry barFast, even pre-polishing on stainless steel, titanium, brass, non-ferrous and precious metals; approx. 600g half bar

Where Cutting Fits in the Process

Prepare the surface with abrasives first, then cut with one of these compounds on a firm mop. Clean the part before moving to Metal Polishing Compounds for cut-and-colour and mirror finishing, using a softer mop and a fresh compound for each stage.

For stainless steel, see Stainless Steel Polishing Compounds and the guide to achieving a mirror finish on stainless steel.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. These are solid compound bars for buffing metal on a polishing mop. Automotive cutting compounds are liquid or paste products designed for paintwork and clear coat.

Ferrocut 3050, Abracut and Titan all have a 9/10 cut rating. Ferrocut and Abracut are aimed at stainless steel and hard alloys, while Titan suits levelling ferrous surfaces.

A firm mop such as sisal is recommended for most cutting compounds. Check each product page for the recommended mop and preparation.

Not on its own. Cutting compounds leave a flat, matt or pre-polished surface ready for a cut-and-colour or mirror-finishing compound.
