How to Polish Metal Using Felt

RODA polishing and finishing tools

Looking for the best way to achieve a high-quality metal finish? At Moleroda, we are experts in polishing and the UK’s leading manufacturer of felt polishing products. In this guide, we’ll show you how to polish metal using felt and diamond compound for a flawless, mirror-like finish.

Felt is naturally mildly abrasive, making it ideal for both buffing and high-precision polishing. Unlike other materials, RODA felt:

  • Is versatile and durable

  • Holds and carries compound effectively

  • Provides a smooth, controlled finish

RODA felt is made in the UK from pure, high-quality wool, making it biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

As well as choice of compound, it is just as important to select the right density of felt for the surface material and desired effect. For more information see our Guide to Choosing the Right Felt Grade and Density for Polishing

  1. Prep the Surface: Use wet and dry abrasive sheets (up to 1200 grit) or RODA NyWheels for pre-polishing.

  2. Choose Your Mounted Felt: Mount your selected a RODA felt bob or wheel suitable for your tool (micromotor or rotary handpiece).

  3. Apply Diamond Compound: Start with a coarse grit (e.g., 20 microns) and work towards finer grades for the perfect shine.

  4. Work in Lapping Fluid: A spray keeps the surface lubricated and cool, improving cutting action.

  5. Polish Evenly: Keep the felt moving to avoid heat build-up.

  6. Clean and Inspect: Use a solvent cleaner spray and a lint-free cloth before moving to a finer grade.
