Soft Felt Polishing Wheels
- Unmounted felt wheels are used for polishing with compound – either rouge for precious metals or diamond compound or Lea compound for other general polishing.
- Hardened felts are used for a more aggressive cut, soft felt is more flexible. Medium Density is the most popular.
- Mounted most commonly on a tapered spindle.
- With the correct mandrel or pigtail these felts can be used with a standard drill, air tool, polishing motor.
- Used by all polishing trades including lapidary’s, sculptors, engineers, jewellers, precision engineers for polishing and lapping on all metals.
- Moleroda manufacture all out felts in our Wiltshire UK factory.
Why use felt for polishing?
Felt is often used for polishing due to several advantages it offers in this application. Some of the key advantages of using felt for polishing include:
Soft and Flexible: Felt is a soft and flexible material, which makes it ideal for polishing surfaces. Its pliability allows it to conform to the shape of the object being polished, reaching into crevices and contours that might be challenging for harder materials.
Absorbent: Felt has the ability to absorb and retain polishing compounds or liquids. This absorption capability helps in evenly distributing the polishing agent onto the surface, ensuring a consistent and controlled polishing process.
Gentle on Surfaces: Felt is a non-abrasive material, making it gentle on surfaces. It is often used for fine polishing applications where a smooth, scratch-free finish is desired. This is particularly important for delicate materials or objects with sensitive surfaces.
Thermal Insulation: Felt has natural insulating properties. This can be advantageous when polishing at high speeds or with friction-inducing compounds, as it helps to dissipate heat and prevents overheating of both the polishing tool and the object being polished.
Durable: Felt is a durable material, and its longevity can contribute to a longer-lasting polishing tool. This durability is important, especially in industrial applications where tools may be subjected to frequent use.
Versatility: Felt can be used for polishing a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, glass, and more. Its versatility makes it a popular choice across various industries.
Cost-Effective: Compared to some specialized polishing materials, felt can be a cost-effective option. It provides a good balance between effectiveness and affordability.
Customizable: Felt can be easily cut and shaped to fit specific polishing needs. This allows for customization of polishing tools for different applications and shapes.
