Mini Ceramic Polishing Stones for Fine Detail Hand Finishing
Mini ceramic polishing stones provide small, square-section abrasive contact for detailed hand finishing. They are used where access, feature size or surrounding geometry makes a larger stone or powered finishing tool difficult to control, including mould and die details, precision components, engraved features and jewellery.
Each stone is 50mm long and is available in 0.5mm, 0.9mm or 1.4mm square cross-sections across four grades from 180 to 1200 grit. Stones are sold individually, so replacement stones can be ordered in the exact grade and size required.
A matching holder is required. The holder supports the stone and controls how much of it is exposed, which is essential with such small cross-sections. Holders are sold separately, or choose a complete set containing four stones and a matching holder.

Choose the Right Grade
Each grade is identified by a colour. Within this range, lower numbers give a coarser cutting action and higher numbers give finer refinement. Grade numbers are equivalent grit values; compare them within the mini stone range only.

Start with the finest grade that removes the existing defect efficiently, then progress through finer grades once the previous scratch pattern has been removed. A grade number does not guarantee a particular surface finish; if a mirror finish is required, plan a final lapping or polishing stage.
Colour alone does not identify the grade. Colour codes are specific to each stone range. For example, Yellow is 180 grit in this mini range but 1500 grit in the 1 x 1mm ultra-fine ceramic stones.
Choose a Size and Matching Holder
Stone sizes refer to the square cross-section. Every grade is available in all three sizes. Choose a cross-section that reaches the working area while still allowing adequate support, then select the holder made for that exact stone size.

A smaller section improves access to tight details, but it also has less support. Where more than one size will reach the feature, the larger section will usually be easier to control.
How to Use Mini Ceramic Polishing Stones
Control the exposed length.
Expose only as much stone as the feature requires. Excessive projection is a common cause of breakage with such small cross-sections.
- Load and set the stone. Fit the stone to the matching holder, then advance it (0.5mm and 0.9mm holders) or clamp it (1.4mm holder) so that only the length needed to reach the feature projects.
- Work with the tip. Present the working tip to the surface at approximately 45 degrees and use light, controlled pressure.
- Work progressively. Remove the existing marks with the starting grade, then move finer. Avoid sideways loading on the exposed stone.
- Clean and inspect between grades. Remove residue from the stone and component so remaining scratches can be assessed and coarse debris is not carried into a finer stage.
- Refresh the tip as it wears. Advance or reset the stone to keep projection short, and re-form a worn tip with a diamond disc rather than increasing pressure.
Use a separate stone for each grade, and wear suitable eye protection when finishing, shaping or shortening stones. Shorten stones with a diamond cutting disc; cutting with pliers crushes the ceramic fibres.
